What Causes Back Pain?
Your back is a fascinating and complicated structure and there are many types of injuries such as sprained ligaments, strained muscles, bulging or ruptured disks and inflammation of the joints.

The most common cause of back pain is a muscle strain or ligament sprain. Sometimes the simplest of movements—for example, picking a tissue off the floor— may result in back pain. Tissue injuries like these typically occur due to improper lifting, poor posture and lack of regular exercise. Obesity and lack of exercise significantly increase your risk of this type of injury.

Back pain may also be the result of sports or accident injuries that cause vertebral fracture or ruptured disk; from arthritis and other age-related changes in your spine; and from certain infections. Possible causes of back pain include:
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Meralgia paresthetica
  • Herniated disk
  • Kidney infection
  • Obesity
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Paget's disease of bone
  • Poor posture
  • Pregnancy
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Sacroiliitis
  • Sciatica
  • Scoliosis
  • Spinal fractures
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Sprains and strains

Spinal Manipulation Treatment
With today's growing awareness of the Opioid epidemic and greater emphasis on quality care, clinical outcomes and cost effectiveness, proven conservative treatments such as Dr. Dukes provides through spinal manipulation are receiving increased attention.

Spinal manipulation is a safe and effective treatment method that reduces pain, hastens physical therapy, and may reduce the need for passive treatments such as bed rest.

Dr. Dukes Tips to Prevent Back Pain
  • Be healthy – maintain a healthy diet and weight
  • Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water and minimize consumption of caffeinated drinks
  • Live active – maintain a regular exercise program that includes core strengthening activity
  • Stretch regularly – warm-up first-thing in the morning and before exercising or physical activities
  • Good posture - focus on your posture in everything you do – sitting, walking, sleeping, etc.
  • Don’t sit too long – Sitting loads the spine so purposely interrupt long periods of sitting
  • Supportive shoes – wear comfortable, supportive, low-heeled shoes
  • Good sleep – get a good nights’ sleep on a mattress of medium firmness to minimize any spine curve
  • Lift right – use your knees, keep the object close to your body, and avoid twisting while lifting
  • Avoid stress – stress causes tension that can lead to back and neck pain
  • Quit smoking now
