What Causes Headaches?
 
Knowing what triggers a headache can help you understand how to avoid getting one in the first place. There is an expansive list of what may cause or contribute to your headache symptoms. Narrowing that down often requires professional help. Physical problems such as muscle tension in the neck contribute to the majority of primary headaches. Headaches may also be caused by diet, noise, lights or lighting, stress, insomnia, excessive exercise or blood sugar changes. Today’s sedentary lifestyle plays a significant role in headaches.  Sitting relatively inactive in a fixed position can increase joint irritation and muscle tension in the neck, back and scalp causing your head to ache.
  
What Can You Do?

Give yourself a break. If you spend a large amount of time at your desk or in front of a computer, stop and stretch at least every hour. Dr. Dukes will help you prepare a stretching plan and, most importantly, guide you in how to stretch properly to achieve consistent results while avoiding injury.
 
Exercise may also help relieve your headache symptoms. However, be sure to consult with Dr. Dukes and your physician prior to beginning an exercise program.
 
Stay hydrated by drinking at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.
 
Schedule a consultation with Dr. Dukes if you experience headaches that:

• Cause you distress, and you would like to find treatment options that enable you to control them better without the use of drugs
• Occur more often than usual
• Are more severe than usual
• Keep you from working, sleeping or participating in normal activities

 
Seek Emergency Care:
Headache can indicate a serious condition such as a stroke, meningitis or encephalitis.
Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately if you or someone you are caring for is experiencing an intense and severe headache accompanied by:

• Confusion or trouble understanding speech
• Fainting
• High fever, greater than 102 F to 104 F (39 C to 40 C)
• Numbness, weakness or paralysis on one side of your body
• Stiff neck
• Trouble seeing
• Trouble speaking
• Trouble walking
• Nausea or vomiting
